The Boyne Valley Drive forms one of the most historic and heritage rich scenic drives in Europe today. The Boyne Valley is located in the East of Ireland, part of the rich tapestry that is Ireland’s Ancient East.  Monasterboice and the Boyne Valley form the ancient capital of Ireland, the seat of the High Kings of Ireland. It is a rich embodiment of myth, sacredness and great historical importance. The drive itself can be completed in one day and is one of the must-see tourist trails in Ireland.

Ancient stories speak richly and reverently about The Monasterboice Inn, located in one of Ireland’s earliest and most renowned religious sites, deriving its name from the Irish Mainistir Bhuite meaning “The Monastery of Buite”. In the 5th century, St Buite founded a monastic community near Drogheda in County Louth and today, it is home to an impressive collection of ruins.

On the site, visitors can discover an old graveyard, two churches and a sundial. Another highlight is the well-preserved round tower, which stands at 28m high. There are also two impressive high crosses –  Muiredach’s Cross and the West Cross, celebrated as being the tallest in Ireland and as one of the best surviving examples of Irish Religious Art.

The Monasterboice Inn is centrally located on the drive, making it a great place to stop for a relaxing meal in a venue steeped in history and Irish heritage.
